All right, I'm sorry I haven't posted in a week but I've been busy moving to North Carolina so deal with it.
I flew down to Norfolk on Wednesday (hardest time leaving my mom) and I drove to Jacksonville on Thursday...after an extended visit to the JMJ Catholic Bookstore in Virginia Beach. I decided that since I'm getting a deployment bonus I could splurge a little bit so I added to my book stockpile: three books by Chesterton (I can't believe I didn't own any yet), a book of poetry by JP2 (before he was JP2 - and I read the first page and was awed), two books on apologetics (one by Scott Hahn - YAY!!)....I wanted to get Joseph Pearce's books on Shakespeare's Catholicism but I decided not to go INSANE splurging and I already have Shadowplay to read (by Clare Asquith) about the subject.
The drive down to The Land of the Missing Teeth went well and the weather was good. I listened to Christopher West's talk on Woman: God's Masterpiece (WOW). I need to make copies of this talk to send it to all my lady friends and relatives :D Anyway, when I passed the billboard advertising breastmilk, I knew I made it to my new home.
Laura's apartment is great! I really like living here. I don't know why people hate on living in Jacksonville so much...as soon as I get back from deployment, I plan to move into an apartment here....I don't think it's all that reasonable for me to live elsewhere (which would require me to live in a house....WHY at this point in my life?).
I checked in to my new unit on Friday. The weather was pretty nice - in the 70s - so I didn't feel the need to change from Alpha's into cammies. My new XO is an Academy grad so we had a nice time talking about Plebe Summer and some of the changes. It's nice to relate like that - I'm sick of being around Academy grads who aren't proud of their school!!! Anyway, Laura is a grad too and I have a good time talking and joking with her about those good ol' times.
I have a giant check-in list to get processed....running around getting it completed makes me feel like a plebe again with a signature sheet....only this time I'm not REQUIRED to embarrass myself to get it done.
On day one (in my Alphas, none the less) Dental got me! They made me get my teeth checked out in order for them to sign my sheet! Dang. Not happy about the prospect of getting spittle all over my uniform...and the X-ray lady was less than pleased with me (I NEVER am able to get my bite wings done without drama...I'm SORRY my mouth is too small!). The waiting room was an experience. I was blessed with watching How Do I Look? and Jerseylicious. The former was stupid but the latter....OH the latter! Ya know, I never thought I would say this but....I felt offended FOR Jersey Shore. By the time my name was called, I was so mentally engrossed in the lame ripoff of a terrible show that I was basically slouched with my head cocked toward the TV, my eyes giving a blank look. I was probably drooling on my uniform too....
So when I walked in to the dentist's office, I was adamant about taking my jacket off (since X-ray lady wouldn't let me take it off before I put on the apron...which I dropped on the floor...then since the bite wings wouldn't take I drooled all over myself). The dentist was more than accomodating but I realized afterward why he had this look on his face like it was an odd request...since I mentioned not wanting to get spit on my uniform....TMI but whatever. It was odd because....it wasn't even a cleaning....it was basically a chit chat with a quick look at my teeth and X-rays. Oops. Oh well.
He told me that those of us who don't develop wisdom teeth (like yours truly) have been said to be evolutionarily advanced. I knew it! He didn't have any either. I knew there was a connection there. Scheduled my cleaning.
